Types of DOT Collections We Perform

Pre-Employment

Required before a new employee performs safety-sensitive functions. Must be completed and cleared before the first regulated duty.

Random Collections

Unannounced, computer-generated random selection. DOT requires a minimum annual collection rate for covered employees. We perform mobile specimen collections when employees are selected by the employer or its program administrator — we do not select employees or administer random-testing pools.

Post-Accident

Required following certain accidents involving a commercial vehicle. Must be completed within specific time windows per DOT regulations.

Reasonable Suspicion

Ordered by a trained supervisor when there is observable evidence of drug or alcohol use by a covered employee.

Return-to-Duty

Required before an employee who violated DOT drug or alcohol rules returns to safety-sensitive functions.

Follow-Up Collections

Unannounced follow-up collections following return-to-duty, as directed by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).

The Process

Following Proper Procedures, Every Collection

Every step follows 49 CFR Part 40 — the federal regulation governing DOT drug and alcohol specimen collection procedures.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does NXT Level do — and what does the laboratory do?

NXT Level Mobile Solutions performs the specimen collection only. Our trained, certified collector comes to your location, follows applicable 49 CFR Part 40 collection procedures, completes the Federal CCF, and then collects, documents, secures, packages, and ships the specimen to the appropriate qualified third-party laboratory designated for the requested service. The laboratory performs all drug specimen analysis and MRO review. We do not analyze specimens, interpret results, or report outcomes.

Who is required to have DOT drug specimen collection?

Any employee who performs safety-sensitive functions regulated by the DOT — including CDL drivers (FMCSA), pilots (FAA), railroad workers (FRA), transit operators (FTA), and pipeline workers (PHMSA).

What drugs are included in the DOT 5-panel screen?

Marijuana (THC), cocaine, opioids (including heroin, codeine, morphine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone), amphetamines (including methamphetamine and MDMA), and phencyclidine (PCP). The laboratory performs this analysis — not NXT Level.

Can you come to our workplace or job site?

Yes. We are a mobile service and travel to your facility, job site, or any agreed location. This minimizes disruption to your operations and eliminates the need to send employees off-site.

Can you support our random collection program?

Yes. We perform mobile specimen collections when employees are selected by the employer or its program administrator. We do not select employees or administer random-testing pools.

Does state marijuana legalization affect DOT specimen collection requirements?

No. DOT drug specimen collection is governed by federal law, not state law. Marijuana remains a prohibited substance under DOT regulations regardless of state legalization status.

Need DOT-Compliant Specimen Collection?

We come to your location. Collection by trained, certified collectors, proper documentation, and specimens shipped to the appropriate qualified third-party laboratory.
